2012 New York State Fair Employment Opportunities

August 23, 2012 - September 3, 2012

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets is now accepting employment applications for temporary positions for the 2012 New York State Fair. All positions are located on the State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, New York.

There are a variety of assignments including: grounds work, cleaning, parking attendants, general labor/maintenance, ticket sellers, ticket takers, ushers, cashiers and other miscellaneous positions.

The inability to work all twelve days of the Fair will limit available assignments. The work hours, hourly rate and duration of employment varies by assignment. Certain positions are needed 3 to 6 days before and/or after the Fair. Applicants may be subject to background investigation/criminal history checks. Positions for applicants under the age of 18 will require working papers and are limited. The Department does not directly employ the food vendors or concessionaires.

Temporary Seasonal Opportunities:

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets is now accepting employment applications for temporary, seasonal employment for the 2012 New York State Fair summer season that runs April to September 2012. The duration and work hours of the positions vary by assignment. All positions are located on the State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, NY. The Department does not directly employ the food vendors or concessionaires.

 

  • General Mechanic: Hourly Hiring Rate, $18.49 

General Mechanics perform journey-level work in one trade, and skilled and semi-skilled level work in a combination of other trades in the repair and maintenance of facilities and equipment. 

Minimum Qualifications: Four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled journey-level position which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprentice training in a trade or training gained by the completion of technical courses in a trade at a school, institute or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted for the above experience on a year-for-year basis.

  • Electricians perform journey-level electrician work and frequently supervise others in the repair, maintenance and installation of electrical systems and equipment.
  • Plumbers and Steamfitters perform journey-level plumbing and steamfitting work in the installation, alteration and repair of pipes, fittings and fixtures of heating, ventilating, water, and drainage systems, according to specifications and plumbing codes.
  • Carpenters perform journey-level carpentry work in the construction and repair of structures and other wood items.
  • Painters perform journey-level painting work in preparing surfaces and applying coats of paint, varnish and other finishes and stains to decorate and protect interior or exterior surfaces and fixtures of buildings, structures, furniture, equipment, and materials.
  • Masons perform journey-level masonry work using building materials such as cement, grout or slurry with stone, brick, concrete cinder block, tile or plaster to construct or repair walls, partitions, chimneys or other structures.

 

  • Clerical: Hourly Hiring Rate, $8.00

Clerical positions perform office support, typing, filing, and clerical tasks in support of State Fair operations.

 

  • State Fair Worker: Hourly Hiring Rate, $7.25 to $15.00 (varies by assignment) 

State Fair Workers perform routine manual tasks, including grounds work, cleaning, parking, and maintenance services as members of a work crew.

Temporary, Year-round, On-call positions:

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets is now accepting employment applications for temporary, year-round positions. The duration and work hours of the positions vary by assignment. All positions are located on the State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, NY.

  • Parking or Events Crew Worker: Hourly Hiring Rate, $8.00

Work hours and days vary, the positions are on-call and used as-needed for events held on the State Fairgrounds on a year-round basis, For Parking, the duties include directing traffic to parking areas and setting up cone and/or signs. For Events, the duties include janitorial work, building maintenance and customer service.

  • Equipment Operator: Hourly Hiring Rate, $12.58

May be assigned to use equipment such as forklifts, scissor lifts, floor scrubbers, tractors, skid steers, back hoes and street sweepers.
